NZ Pāua Shell, 4x Objective

(Halotis iris, NZ Abalone)

A pāua shell’s growth depends on its environment. When the pāua has plenty of nutrients, its shell will grow. When there is a lack of nutrients, it may stop growth for a time, resulting in growth lines and ripples.
Looking at a pāua shell, we are indirectly looking at where it came from. In the shell we can see shorelines, rocky substrates, crashing waves and flowing currents. The shimmering iridescence is a result of light being scattered by tiny aragonite platelets. This shimmering gives life and presence to the whatu (eyes) of our tīpuna rendered in whakairo (wood carvings).

All indicated sizes are printed on a Premium 255gsm Metallic Gilcee paper unless clearly labelled "POSTER". See "Papers" on the right for more info.
